The Biggest Party in Town, or the Palace of Culture Turns 60!
The Palace of Culture and Science turns 60. All July is filled with celebrations, but the major events will be held on and around the 22nd of July – the day when the palace will be open to Warsaw residents. The biggest birthday party in Warsaw will be celebrated on Plac Defilad. Toasts, lasers, fireworks. Music, dancing, and stars. Tetris® in the windows of the Palace. Outdoor concert of Zbigniew Wodecki with Mitch & Mitch Orchestra and Choir, and city dancing led by Marcin Masecki with JAZZBANDBIGBAND. Exhibitions and meetings under the “Get to know your palace” cycle. The majority of events are free.
60 years have passed
The Palace of Culture and Science has been with us for 60 years. It has seen both good and bad moments of Warsaw, witnessing its transformation into a lovely European city.
We would like for the birthday of the Palace of Culture to become our common Warsaw fete. Like on any birthday party, we will have fun, dance, laugh and get emotional. We will also remember and get to know the Palace better, says Marta Bartkowska who is in charge of the “Plac Defilad” project.
The Jubilee celebrations are for us a key event this year. We have started with the Exhibition of Original Palace Souvenirs, we have published a Palace Walking Guide, we have opened Palace vaults to visitors, we have organized a Stanisław Tym run, and an outdoor screening of films about the Palace and with the Palace as main hero as part of the outdoor cinema on Plac Defilad. We are expecting a great many events, such as an auction of Congress Hall chairs. The climax of celebrations will last for several days, starting on the 20th of July, points out Renata Kaznowska, President of the Management Board of the Palace of Culture and Science.
Between the 20th and the 26th of July, that is throughout the birthday week, the 60th Anniversary sign will be displayed on the windows on all sides of the Palace. On the 21st of July, in the evening, a 1995 documentary by Jan Strękowski will be screened, entitled Pekin. Among the people featured in the film is Antoni Chodorowski, a well-known Polish caricaturist whose exhibition With the Palace in the background will be opened to the public on the 22nd of July, 11.00 a.m., in the main hall of the Palace.
On the 22nd of July, from 12.00 noon until 6.00 p.m., there will be a birthday party for kids: “The Palace is GREAT”, with a birthday cake of course. To participate, simply buy a ticket and go up to the 30th floor of the Palace.
The 22nd of July: Long live the Palace!
The 22nd of July marks the anniversary of the official opening of the Palace to the public, and on this very day the Varsovians will have a toast at the table in front of the Palace, at Plac Defilad.
The anniversary evening will begin at 8.00 p.m. in the Palace’s Marble Hall with the opening of Jacek Fota’s exhibition and the premiere of his photo album dedicated to the Palace of Culture and Science, with photographs of unknown and usually non-accessible corners of this iconic building.
The Studio Theatre will offer its stage to the “Pożar w burdelu” cabaret. At 8.30 p.m. their new production Upiór w Pałacu (Phantom in the Palace) will be premiered.
At 9:00 p.m. Michał Ogórek, who is exactly the same age as the Palace, will take over the role of the MC of the show. As part of the event Twisted history of the Palace he will present archival documentaries on the Palace, prepared for the occasion together with the History Meeting House.
The climax of the evening will be the birthday toast. Around 10.30 p.m., everybody is invited to the table in front of the Palace, at Plac Defilad. Following the toast, Bartek Mindewicz with his Stare Piosenki Nocą (Old Songs at Night) will bring back to us the music from the six decades of the existence of the Palace.
The Palace of Culture and Science is a very special place – historically, architectonically and emotionally. Warsaw residents have lots of meanings and memories connected with the place, while tourists associate it mainly with the viewing terrace and admiring the magnificent Warsaw panorama. Today, the Palace together with Plac Defilad form an important cultural center in the life of the capital, a symbolic place – the heart of Warsaw, which we wish to infuse with energy. We want to create urban space as important and as beautiful as in other European capitals. The jubilee week will let us look at the changes that have taken place in this area and enjoy Warsaw of today and what it has to offer, both to its residents and to the visitors, said Jarosław Jóźwiak, Vice-President of Warsaw.
23 July: Play Tetris® on the windows of the Palace
To celebrate its 60th birthday, on the 23rd of July the Palace of Culture and Science will turn into a large, colorful light installation – an interactive game board. Between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., the illuminated Palace windows facing Marszałkowska Street will be transformed into a playable game of the worldwide fan favorite video game, Tetris®, where players can try their luck at clearing lines of colourful Tetriminos, on the Palace façade.
A special player zone will be created near the Honorary Tribune. Everybody will have a chance to come to the Palace and compete with other players. Steering the playing blocks using special application, you will be able to observe your results in the real time on the Palace façade.
The official opening of the game with the participation of invited guests is planned for 10 p.m. on the 23rd of July. Launching of Tetris® on the Palace of Culture and Science will be accompanied by live music, played by the Plac Defilad Orchestra. With musical sets prepared for the occasion, the Orchestra will be building accompaniment to the game, thus helping the players in their strife.
A food zone with food trucks will also be established nearby, so that the players can recharge their energy.

The show will be created with the help and engagement of Warsaw residents and Internet users from all over Poland. An application „Złóż życzenia Pałacowi” (“Send birthday wishes to the Palace”) will be available online at plefilad.pl, pkin.pl and laserslab.com websites. Using this application, everybody will be able to create graphic animations integrated with music. You can send your animations in until midnight of the 22nd of July, and the best will be selected and used in the Light and Sound show.
After the show, around 11 p.m., the Tetris® finals are planned. Players who got the best scores the day before will compete. At the end, after the prize award ceremony, Warsaw residents will have one more chance to play the game.
The 25th of July: Concert by Zbigniew Wodecki with Mitch & Mitch Orchestra and Choir, and a city dancing on Plac Defilad
No birthday party can do without dance and music. That’s why, to celebrate the 60th birthday of the Palace, a unique outdoor concert will be held, open to all, featuring exceptional music stars, followed by a city dance.
On a Saturday evening, at 9 p.m., the first concert promoting the album entitled 1976: A Space Odyssey will begin. It is an intergenerational project by a giant of the Polish music scene with the elite of Warsaw musicians. The album by Zbigniew Wodecki with Mitch & Mitch Orchestra and Choir was released on the 15th of May 2015, and it took just four weeks for the song promoting it, entitled Rzuć to wszystko, co złe (Leave all the bad things behind), to reach the top of the Polish Radio Programme Three Hits Chart. After the concert, at 11 p.m., a very special city jazz dance will start, with JAZZBANDBIGBAND led by Marcin Masecki.
Artists of different ages and backgrounds. Various music aesthetics; everlasting love for music and for Warsaw. This very special concert will be a birthday present for the public to celebrate the 60th birthday of the Palace of Culture and Science and of Plac Defilad, the biggest dancing floor in the city… Several dozens of musicians on stage, and many hours of fun for everybody…
Stołeczna Estrada is the partner of the event. It is as old as the Palace. On the 25th of July, the 60th anniversary dancing organized by Stołeczna Estrada will move from Podzamcze to Plac Defilad.
The 26th of July: Get to know your Palace
After the birthday attractions, the time will come to get to know the birthday ‘boy’ better. “Get to know your Palace” will be a chance to visit parts of the Palace normally not accessible to the public. Between 12.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m., the Palace of Culture and Science and the institutions it houses invite the public to visit. You’re sure to make a lot of discoveries…

About Plac Defilad
Plac Defilad (Parade Square) is the main square of Warsaw, but the term also refers to the cycle of events initiated in 2014, known under an umbrella name of “Plac Defilad”. Its main organizer is the City of Warsaw, and the Studio Theatre hosts the event. The Palace of Culture and Science is the axis and the most important symbol of Plac Defilad, and it is also one of the project partners. The project is created jointly by culture institutions and cafes functioning (or planning to function) in the Palace, i.a., barStudio, Cafe Kulturalna and Dramatyczny Theatre. The idea behind the project is to create people-friendly, open urban space in the centre of Warsaw.
